WHY
THE CONTROVERSY
Part 4
Remember that little thing called The Establishment Clause.
By law we have to keep church and state divided. In other words, you can’t teach religion in a public school science class. Over the years, some religious folks have disagreed and tried to get religion taught in schools.
The prime example happened in 1925.
The folks in Tennessee wrote up a law that prohibited the teaching of “any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals.”
Well, as luck would have it, some guy named Scopes ignored the law and got himself arrested. It created quite a stir and they took him to court. You might of heard about it . It was referred to as the “Scopes trial” or more popularly as the “Monkey Trial.”
He was accused of teaching evolution in a science class.
People have been arguing ever since.
